Welcome To Knowledge Mappers
Knowledge Mappers is a unique, digital mapping consultancy & publishing company. Our ground-breaking knowledge products & services ‘visually connect’ people with what they need to know so that individuals, teams, organisations & communities can do what they need to do to move forward – quicker, easier and with a lot less stress 🙂
Geographic mapping & spatial analysis
Mapping and sharing information geographically is our first passion, and we have over 50 years of collective experience covering all aspects of Geographic Information (GI) – GI Consultancy (in both the public and private sectors) – sourcing / capturing data – spatial analysis using GIS (we are a registered ICO data processor) – publishing & sharing as both online map-enabled data portals and large format paper maps.
Our School Travel Health Check (STHC) spatial analysis service – which provides high quality, spatial intelligence data to local authorities, school communities and other stakeholders interested in how children travel to school, from where, and how far they travel to get there – has been combining all of these GI skills in the one service since 2005.
We are also passionate about the development of spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) at all levels to ensure that this key knowledge is accessible to all who need it – be they members of the GI Professional Community or communities defined geographically – and they know what to do with it it once they have it.
Knowledge mapping using Corel (Mindjet) MindManager
Our ‘traditional’ mapping skills are complemented by nearly 20 years expertise with Mindjet MindManager, the worlds best information (‘mind’) mapping software (well over 100 years when you include our fellow partners in the MindManager International Value Added Partner (MIVAP) Network). Its awsome flexibility and productivity-boosting features make it the ‘digital tool of first resort’ for anybody who works with digital information.
Early on we realised that we could use MindManager to create maps of just about any ‘real world space’, not just those defined geographically. Like a ‘traditional’ map, these ‘knowledge maps’ are a visually structured record of the ‘things’ in the space, the relationships between them and the ‘bigger picture’ context in which they are found. However with the ability to attach multiple hyperlinks to online official / definitive / plain old useful knowledge resouces about the ‘things’, as well as other visual knowledge features that we can embed within, or attach to, 1000’s of branches, our maps are also complete, visually structured, knowledge portals.
Thanks to MindManager’s unique HTML exporting capability, the HTML versions of knowledge maps can be accessed by anybody using any modern browser, on any device, on or offline, without the need for any plugins. In addition for anybody with access to MindManager software, the maps can be used as ‘ready made’ templates for their own projects so they do not have to re-invent the knowledge wheel each time, which they can also amend / adapt, in whole or in part, as required.
So we decided to knowledge map the world and make our maps available to it on our online map download store, as well as offer a knowledge mapping consultancy service so others can benefit from our expertise, along with MindManager consultancy to help others to get the most from this most amazing tool.

Our School Travel Health Check (STHC) Spatial Analysis Service is cited as the example of best practice for public health in the South West Region in the 2009 Annual Report of the UK Government Chief Medical Officer (see “Increasing active travel by schoolchildren” – p73).
“This innovative sustainable development initiative aims to provide robust data that will allow schools, planners and individuals to develop more sustainable school travel options.”
“Active travel to school is an important source of physical activity for young people. It could be increased further. These statistics provide a useful baseline against which to measure progress, and should be used in conjunction with a qualitative assessment of local authority and school travel policies.”

Knowledge Mappers News
Here’s the latest news from our blog….
ISO 3166-1 Countries of the World Knowledge Atlas Maps
Our Countries of the World – General & Geographic Knowledge Atlas builds on the visual knowledge framework of our Base Atlas through the addition of collections of knowledge link sub-branches – each with a single hyperlink to official / definitive / plain old useful General or Geographic knowledge resources – to facilitate ‘thumb friendly’ discovery of basic knowledge about each ISO3166-1 defined country of the world for business or personal desktop (or even ‘on the hoof’) research.
General resource links include the country’s page(s) for BBC News, CIA World Fact Book & World Leaders & Cabinet Members Directory, ISO Online Portal, Wikipedia Category & Main Article, Portal & Outline.
Geogrpahic resource links include online mapping services like Google Maps and Open Street Map (with a summary of all available services on GeoHack), static map libraries from the United Nations Geospatial Division, UNITAR & WikiMedia Commons Atlas of the World, and the Wikipedia Geography Sub-Category & Main Article.
See the ‘Knowledge Links’ tab for a complete description of all single link sub-branches.
Are you all sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin…
Building on the ISO3166-1 Countries Of The World – Base Atlas, this map adds collections of knowledge link sub-branches – each with a single hyperlink to official / definitive / plain old useful General or Geographic knowledge resources – to facilitate ‘thumb friendly’ discovery of basic knowledge about the country for business or personal desktop research. This includes the country’s page(s) for BBC News, CIA World Fact Book & World Leaders & Cabinet Members Directory, ISO Online Portal, Wikipedia Category & Main Article, Portal & Outline, online mapping services like Google Maps and Open Street Map (with a summary of all available services on GeoHack), static map libraries from the United Nations Geospatial Division, UNITAR & WikiMedia Commons Atlas of the World, and the Wikipedia Geography Sub-Category & Main Article.
In our countries of the world atlas maps all the knowledge link sub-branch collections sit within the base framework of knowledge seed branches for each country – as officially defined by ISO-3166-1: Codes For The Representation Of Names Of Countries – arranged as sub-branches within an ‘org-tree’ base framework of seed branches of UN defined Macro Geographical (Continental) Regions And Sub-Regions. Seed branches are differentiated from other map branches by the rich range of visual knowledge elements embedded within, or attached to, them that provides a ‘base level’ of contextual knowledge & knowledge resource links about the subject (see the ‘Seed Branches’ tab for a complete description).
